Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't you offer in-office treatments?
As a center that works with clients all over the country, we discovered that is far more cost-effective to install units in peoples homes and teach them how to use them safely and responsibly. Compared to charging for individual or package session like other places do, we estimate the cost savings exceeds 60% for our renters! Also, as an added benefit, our renters will often use their rental credits to purchase the equipment if they love it, or return it if they feel like they’ve had enough sessions. This makes our "Rent with option to purchase" or "90-day try-before-you-buy" program the most cost effective option available!
Do I need a prescription for HBOT?

Yes, you will need a clearance from a doctor for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). We can assist you if you do not have a clinician familiar with HBOT by sending you what the prescription needs to say or having you complete our Safety Prescreening Questionnaire.

What does a mild hyperbaric session feel like?

During the compression stage you may feel a fullness in your ears and a slight warmth in temperature. It is similar to what you experience when traveling in an airplane. Yawning or swallowing can help alleviate the fullness sensation in your ears and the temperature should stabilize once the desired pressurization is reached.

The treatment stage is intended to be entirely painless. You will breathe in oxygen in a pressurized environment. You should feel comfortable enough to relax, sleep, read, or listen to music.

During the decompression stage you may notice a slight cooling in the chamber. You may experience a popping sensation in your ears – again, similar to what you might experience during airline travel.

In most cases, the compression and decompression stages last about 8-13 minutes each.

There is no downtime after HBOT. You will be able to immediately resume your regular activities after your in-home HBOT session.

How often should I use my HBOT chamber?

In most cases, a person will need to undergo mild hyperbaric oxygen sessions repeatedly before noticing a difference. How often you use your HBOT chamber will depend on the doctors recommendations and the reason you are undergoing therapy. In the majority of cases, we’ve found the most effective frequency is a 60 to 90 minute session, once or twice a day for an initial 4 to 8 weeks for its more immediate benefits. For those who decide to buy their rental unit, 3 to 5 days a week for maintenance is the norm.

Is in-home hyperbarics safe?

In-Home Hyperbaric oxygen is very safe with proper use and training. This includes clearing the ears during decompression and administering the correct amount of oxygen. Be sure to follow the guidelines as well as instructions from your prescribing physician. When pressure precautions are followed, and pain is avoided with pressure increases and decreases, mild hyperbaric oxygen has virtually no adverse effects.

What is the difference between using a hyperbaric chamber versus an oxygen tank?

Breathing in extra oxygen using an oxygen mask will increase the amount of oxygen carried by your blood’s hemoglobin. However, your red blood cells can only carry so much oxygen at normal atmospheric pressure. By using an oxygen mask without increasing pressure, you miss the opportunity to significantly increase the amount of oxygen carried in your blood plasma, which typically only contains 3% oxygen.

Hyperbaric oxygen administration, however,  allows significantly more oxygen to dissolve into blood plasma with an ingenious solution: by increasing the atmospheric (barometric) pressure while breathing in concentrated oxygen. This not only increases the amount of oxygen that binds to your blood hemoglobin – but also pushed oxygen into the blood plasma so it can be delivered in far greater amounts to the tissues than is possible at normal atmospheric air pressure levels.

If I have a cold or flu, can I still undergo mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

It’s best to delay being in a pressure environment until your cold or flu symptoms subside and all residual fluid is your sinuses have resolved. The rule of thumb is pressure is ok, pain is not! If you feel pain you must abort your session or risk injury to your ears, lungs, or sinus spaces.

Can I modify my HBOT chamber?

No. Modifying a portable hyperbaric chamber – even if you purchase it outright from us – is illegal and potentially harmful. The chambers are approved by the FDA for a specific amount of pressure. A modified chamber is considered adulterated by the FDA and it automatically loses its safety compliance approval. For your own health’s sake, it is important that you do not modify any HBOT chamber.

Does insurance cover Hyperbarics?
There are select conditions where Hyperbarics may be paid for by a third-party insurance company. However, these conditions are serious medical ailments, such as open wounds, or carbon monoxide poisoning (for example) and require being supervised in a hospital setting. There is no situation where self-administered Hyperbarics in the home is covered by insurance. However, all of our chambers are considered class II medical devices, approved by the FDA, and require a prescription. Therefore they qualify for flex spending plans, and can be deducted as a line item on your taxes as a medical expense.
Do I need a prescription to rent or purchase a chamber from NBH?
Yes. All of our hyperbaric chambers and oxygen producing equipment are FDA approved, Class II medical devices and require a prescription. There are certain situations where a medical condition is contraindicated, and there are also safety considerations that need to be taken into account when authorizing in-Home hyperbaric sessions. That is why we always perform a pre-screening and consent process with all of our patients and clients regardless if they have a prescription from their local supervising physician.
Do you offer financing?
At Natural Balance Hyperbarics we are doing our best to make this incredible and highly sought after self-care approach available to more and more people. In keeping with this mission we have three main programs:
(a) Our most popular is our "90-day-try-before-you-buy" program, which is essentially a no-obligation rental program with option to purchase. If you love the unit and want to keep it and you have already finished your 90-day rental, you can pay off the balance of your chamber over 6 months at 0% financing plus a $45/per month bookkeeping fee. Or you are welcome to send it back to us, no strings attached and receive your security deposit back minus return shipping cost.
(b) Next we have our lowest-price guaranteed purchase program. This is designed for those who want maximum discounts and the lowest price possible for a full purchase. This is one-time transaction with free free training, free accessories, and an 10L/20PSI O2 generator at near cost! At this point, you own the chamber and we become your technical support and warranty liaison. If you are looking for the lowest price possible this is always your best option. Note this transaction would be via bank wire, ACH, check or Zelle. There is a 4% transaction fee for credit card purchases (the average of what the bank charges us for the transaction.)
(c) Finally, we do offer 0% in-house financing for select units with 30-40% down for 6 months, depending on the total cost of the chamber, oxygen, concentrator and accessories. While there are less discounts with this option compared to an outright purchase, many people appreciate the 0% financing when they are certain they want to make the investment for the long-term, but cannot afford an outright purchase, or monthly rental fees.
Do you offer vertical and wheel-chair accesible units?
The answer is a resounding yes! As this is often the population that needs hyperbaric sessions most! We have many clients with various mobility limitations and offer walk-in units as well as those specifically designed for wheelchair and gurney entry. This is one of the reason we offer a personalized chamber selection process once we receive medical clearance. Our process helps you choose the right unit that falls within your desired budget.
Do your chambers come with an oxygen concentrator?
This is a very good question and perhaps one of the best ways to determine if a mild hyperbaric chamber is FDA approved and has legitimate air- quality and safety oversight versus the many non-FDA approved chambers flooding the US market currently from places like China and being sold to US buyers without legitimate air-quality or safety oversight.
The bottom line is the FDA has never approved a mild hyperbaric chamber that provides its own oxygen concentrator.
The reason is hyperbaric chambers are approved on the basis of their ability to safely contain pressure for multiple years safely and without incident. Whereas oxygen generators and oxygen concentrators are approved in the US to provide Hospital quality alternatives to 100% oxygen tanks. These are approved on the basis of safety and "delivered O2 quality and purity." So the only legitimate and legal way for a center like ours to provide clients supplemental oxygen along with in-home mild Hyperbarics is to combine an FDA approved hyperbaric chamber with an FDA approved oxygen concentrator with a minimum O2 delivery rate of 10L /20PSI to overcome the 30% above atmospheric pressure within the chamber. This is accomplished through a manufacturer designed medical pass-through system or O2 auxiliary port on the chamber.
All of our quotes for rental and purchase can be written with or without supplemental oxygen and accessories. But we do not have any hyperbaric chambers that we offer that provide their own oxygen source. All mild hyperbaric chambers are pressurized with 21% room air. To achieve more oxygen during treatment you will need an oxygen concentrator. Which in theory, depending on the design of the mask system (i.e. non-rebreather is preferred), the seal or fit of the mask, and the internal temperature of the chamber (along with other variables) allows a person to breathe anywhere from 75 to 93% oxygen enriched air while undergoing hyperbaric sessions.
What is the difference between high-pressure steel hyperbaric chambers, and mild-pressure soft and portable hyperbaric chambers.
This is a great question! There are significant differences between the two and both have their appropriate uses and value. I would encourage you to watch our video Hyperbarics In The home (on our home page) to learn more specifically about portable, hyperbaric oxygen.
But the short answer is mild hyperbaric oxygen can legally achieve up to 30% above atmospheric pressure in the US and all FDA approved chambers have medical pass-through auxiliary ports for supplemental oxygen as well. There are many inappropriate conditions for mild hyperbaric oxygen to include immediate post stroke, healing of open wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning, osteonecrosis, and a variety of other severe medical conditions. However, there are far more health benefits associated with mild Hyperbarics to be considered then as a specific treatment for a specific illness conditions. Which is why the modality is taking the world by storm.  It is also why a center like ours, that has been renting these units for over 10 years prior to our clients purchasing them, where we observe consistently that 9 out of 10 renters will purchase a unit because how the modality makes them feel.
Clearly there is growing evidence that mild-pressure hyperbaric oxygen improves systemic inflammation, cognitive decline and is generally considered a reliable anti-aging and health maintenance approach world-wide. There’s a large following of patients and clients throughout the world who count mild Hyperbarics as helping them live happier and healthier lives. There’s is also a long list of prominent and well-know Biohackers and doctors, such as Tony Robbins, David Asprey that recommend mild Hyperbarics routinely. And there is even longer list of physicians who prescribe it under the authority of their medical licenses. It is true that there is an unfortunate lack of research, but we also know firsthand that there is interesting and compelling research in the pipeline that will demonstrate the benefit of mild Hyperbarics and put to rest the conversation as to whether or not it is beneficial or not soon enough.
The bottom line is: High-pressure Hyperbarics and Mild Hyperbarics are entirely different from one another, but they are each inherently valuable for their own purposes. Anybody who says otherwise is only trying to promote their way of doing Hyperbarics and are protecting their turf and their business model. Which is both unfortunate and shortsighted...
How often should I do mild hyperbaric treatments?
This is always determined by the prescribing or supervising physician who has provided safety and fitness oversight. Our doctors will often prescribe Hyperbarics up to 90 minutes twice daily with eight hours in between the first and the second dive as a maximum. On average, our renters report using the chamber anywhere between 25 to 45 times per rental month. That said, certain medical conditions, such as weaknesses in the lungs, or other illnesses, would require one to be more cautious and careful, and undergo mild hyperbarics for less time and/or less often. Again, this is always be determined by the prescribing physician.
How long does each treatment take?
On average therapeutic time frames are 60 to 90 minutes. The amount of time it takes to get to full pressure and come down for full pressure depends on tolerance. Anticipate anywhere between 8 to 13 minutes on average.
What is the price range for purchase and rentals?
We have a variety of sizes and models to choose from and the prices for rentals range from $899 for our smallest unit (if available) to $2700 per month for our largest and best systems. We also have gently used discounted units that were previously rented from time to time, but this is not the norm as 9 out of 10 renters will buy out their units after renting.
For purchase, prices range from approximately $ 6000/$7000 all the way up to $25000 depending on the model and size. This pricing includes, discounted gently used units that were previously rented.
Our oxygen concentrator’s retail for approximately $1700-1800, however we always discount them for our renters to on average $12-$1400, and they rent between $250-$295 depending on the specific model, and or if it’s new or gently used.
